We’ve compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions about the Midnight Walk 2012, supported by Engage Mutual. If your question is not answered below, please feel free to get in touch.
How long will the walk take?
The walk will take anything from 2 to 4 hours to complete, but please remember that it is definitely not a race and there will be no pressure to finish in a certain time. Having fun is more important than a record breaking time. We expect everyone to be tucking into bacon butties by 4am.
How old do I need to be?
The Midnight Walk 2012 is open to everybody, however for safety reasons under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Under 16s can register here.
I’m a wheelchair user – can I still take part?
Yes! All registration points are accessible and the route has been designed to accommodate all abilities. Please contact us prior to completing the registration form to discuss your needs.
What time shall I arrive?
Gates will open at 10.45pm for registration. We’ll have a fun warm up before the walk to get everyone limbered up and ready for the stroke of midnight!
Will there be anywhere for me to leave my personal belongings while I walk?
Unfortunately there are no facilities to leave personal possessions so please do make sure that you only bring with you absolutely essential items. Saint Michael’s accepts no liability for damage or loss to personal property during the event.
Will there be car parking facilities on the night?
Car parking will be available at the Great Yorkshire Showground, near the Brown Gate. A shuttle bus will take you to the registration hall. Please try and minimise vehicle traffic through car sharing or by walking where possible. You’ll be reducing your carbon footprint to boot – well done you!
Will there be toilets en route?
Toilet facilities will be available at the start and end of the route as well as at the half way point.
Will there be first aid facilities?
We will have first aiders available at the Yorkshire Event Centre and along the route. If at any time during the night you feel unwell or unable to continue you must alert a first aider or steward immediately.
Can I get food and drink on the night?
You are welcome to bring your own refreshments to consume on the walk but no alcohol will be permitted within the event site or during the walk. Hot drinks and bacon butties will be available for purchase at the end of the walk.
Can I bring my dog?
Unfortunately we cannot accommodate pets on the walk except for Guide Dogs and our registered volunteer PAT dog.
What on earth shall I wear?
We recommend that you wear comfortable shoes and clothes. Although the walk is in June, we cannot guarantee good weather. All walkers must wear their Midnight Walk t-shirt and display their walker number.
How do I get my hands on a fabulous Midnight Walk t-shirt?
When you register for the Midnight Walk, a sponsorship pack and t-shirt will be posted to you.
Can we walk as a group?
Yes absolutely. Each member of the group must register individually.
Do I have to raise a certain amount of money?
We have not set a minimum sponsorship amount that you need to raise, but we do ask that you raise as much as you can! We will post out your sponsor forms with your confirmation letter.
What is Gift Aid and why is it so important?
Gift Aid allows charities to reclaim the tax on donations at a rate of 25 per cent from the Inland Revenue. By ticking the Gift Aid box on the sponsor form and providing their full name and address, each UK taxpayer will make every pound of their pledge worth an extra 25p to Saint Michael’s. So for every £100 raised in sponsorship, we can increase it by £25 at no extra cost or hassle to you! Who said there is no such thing as free money? Visit the Government’s Gift Aid web page for more information.
How can I hand in my sponsor money?
There will be no facilities to take money on the night of the walk so just send your sponsor money to the Saint Michael’s by August 30 2012. Please make cheques payable to Saint Michael’s Hospice. Don’t forget to send in all sponsor forms so we can claim Gift Aid and thank you personally for your hard work.
If you have set up a Justgiving page, your sponsorship money will be paid directly to Saint Michael’s, leaving you to put your feet up and congratulate yourself on an incredible achievement. We hope that you have fun and enjoy taking part in this event and please remember, no matter how quickly you complete the walk or how much sponsorship you raise, we want you to be proud of what you have achieved.
